Liver elastography with FibroScan®, is a non-invasive way of measuring the stiffness of your liver. FibroScan® works by emitting a small pulse of energy, which may feel like a slight vibration on your skin. FibroScan® calculates the speed of this energy to give your healthcare provider an immediate measure of the stiffness of your liver. This measure can be an important part of understanding your overall liver health.

It is important to tell your healthcare provider if you are pregnant, or if you have any active implantable electronic devices, such as a pacemaker, defibrillator or pump.

How should I prepare for my liver elastography examination?

It is important to conduct your examination on an empty stomach, so DO NOT eat or drink anything (except water) for at least 3 hours before your arrival.
Wear comfortable clothes that will allow your healthcare provider to expose the right side of your rib cage.

What does the liver elastography examination consist of?

You lie on your back, with your right arm raised behind your head. The technician applies a water-based gel to the skin and places the probe with a slight pressure

The technician makes a series of 10 consecutive measurements during the examination. During these measurements, you feel a slight vibration on the skin at the tip of the probe.
The measurements will be used to establish an overall stiffness score.

Your physician interprets the result according to your history and underlying disease. You will be advised of the result within 7-10 days
